James Maddison admits fears over Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher criticism

Leicester star James Maddison admits he is desperate to maintain a high level of performance - to avoid criticism on Monday Night Football.

Maddison, 22, is enjoying a fine campaign with the high-flying Foxes with Brendan Rodgers' men third after seven matches.

The England international sat out the 5-0 success over Newcastle on Sunday but should return for the clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

And he is hoping he turns in a decent display to avoid being picked apart by pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

"There is never a moment you can switch off and not do your defensive duties, because you will get punished," he told Sky Sports.

"Every camera is on you so there is no hiding place. It comes to Monday Night Football and Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville are stood there pointing you out, with a circle on you, in slow mo.

"There is no getting away from it."

Maddison was asked if he had ever been singled out for criticism and admits there was one incident last season.

"There was one time last year against Liverpool at home. I was one of the blockers from a corner and Firmino got the run on me and headed it in," he added.

"I think there was a ring around me on that Monday Night Football - but I turned it off and put the news on instead.

"I always watch and Monday Night Football is the perfect example. When they look back and go through the goals, that's when me and my dad sit down and talk football."

Maddison is likely to again be called up by Gareth Southgate for England's upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
