James Gunn teases new shows for the DCU: “I think people are gonna be freaked out by the next couple of TV shows”

Peacemaker season 2 is in a unique position within the newly minted DCU. Kicked off with James Gunn’s Superman, the second season of Chris Smith’s (John Cena) story is a project that started in the former DCEU and has carried over.

At the New York premiere for the series, I was lucky enough to speak with James Gunn about the DCU as a whole, but not intentionally. One of the funnier aspects of Peacemaker to me is that the character was never that important within the DC Comics canon. He was a side character and one that people probably didn’t care that strongly about. But now, through Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the subsequent show, he is a household name.

It made me wonder about side characters that people love. There are a lot of characters out there who are not “important” enough to lead the shows but end up being incredibly interesting characters. So when I spoke with Gunn, I asked him if he had characters like that for himself. Not that it had to be a DC character but just in general.

The show’s creator and the co-CEO of DC Studios surprised me with his response, teasing that the next slate of shows for the DCU would be shocking to fans. “Well, I think people are gonna be freaked out by the next couple of TV shows we do. They’re not gonna be what people are expecting.” He didn’t give any hints, just saying he was going to “leave it there.”

With Cena’s take on Chris being so iconic, it will be interesting to see what Gunn is hinting at. The DC canon is vast with a lot of characters not yet having their time in the sun. If we have the option to have some side characters get their chance, then it will be fun to see how they interact with the DC world at large!

Peacemaker season 2 premieres on HBO on August 21.
