Jamaal Lascelles names one player who he hopes is fit to return to face Burnley

Jamaal Lascelles is hopeful that players returning from injury can spring Newcastle United back into winning form.

The United captain pinpointed the return of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey as one who could potentially help to turn the Magpies shocking form around.

Having lost to Crystal Palace - their last league victory came against Chelsea on January 18th, and while criticism and concern has grown in recent weeks, Lascelles wants to ensure fans that team are still fighting for each other.

"In terms of togetherness, and team spirit - it's really high," Lascelles told NUFC TV.

"In training it's intense, we get after each other, we demand a lot of each other, and we're getting a few lads back from injury which is important.

"Hopefully Jonjo is fit and we've made a few changes, the lads have had to adapt to a different style of play which might take a little while to bed in but hopefully now two games is enough and we can get a win."

That sense of unity is something has been embedded in the squad since that Championship season of 2016-17, in which Lascelles established himself as first-team player the side.

The importance of that team spirit has not been lost on the 26-year-old: "It's vital for the way we play that everyone is on the same page.

"We know exactly what to do - and fight for each other.

"All season we've worked really hard for the club, the manger, the fans and we're going to keep doing that."

Lascelles feels that United can turn results in their favour over the next few weeks with Burnley, and Southampton on the horizon.

He added: "We are going to need to improve a little bit and the perfect time to do it is at home in-front of our fans.

"We know they'll be behind us from the start.

"We've got a little run where we can put some points on the board.

"If you look at the teams [to come] no disrespect, we do fancy ourselves and hopefully we can put some points on the board, and try to get 40 points before the next break - that would be nice."
