Jailed former NT police commissioner released in time for Christmas

John McRoberts (right) has been released from prison.

Jailed former NT police commissioner John McRoberts has been released from prison and will spend Christmas at home.

He was released from Darwin's Holtze Prison at 8.30am this morning and can serve the rest of his sentence from home.

In June this year, McRoberts was found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice in a travel agent fraud investigation, where he was having a sexual relationship with the main suspect.

He was sentenced to three years in prison to be suspended after 12 months but was eligible for release after six months — coinciding with a Christmas Eve release.

If he is compliant, it is understood he may be eligible for release in six months.

A spokesman from the NT Attorney-General's Department said McRoberts would only be allowed to leave his Darwin residence for "approved activities" such as medical appointments.

He is required to wear an ankle bracelet.
