Jaguars not expecting LB James Onwualu back this season after a ‘significant’ injury

The Jacksonville Jaguars took another hit at one of their thinnest positions Monday as linebacker James Onwualu had to be carted off the practice field during the team’s first joint session against the Baltimore Ravens. Coach Doug Marrone, unfortunately, confirmed that the injury was “significant” Tuesday and was one which ended the young linebacker’s season though the details weren’t revealed.

“It’s tough,” Marrone said Tuesday. “He has worked his butt off and worked real hard. I saw him [Monday] afterward. It’s just a tough situation. You thank the player for everything he put in, but you kind of know what the road looks like ahead.”

Onwunalu, 24, was listed as the co-starter alongside Leon Jacobs at the SAM linebacker position on the team’s first unofficial depth chart, so it appears he had a great deal of momentum heading into this week. It’s unclear of the team’s plans heading forward in terms of depth, but with Jacobs currently listed as the only healthy option at the strong-side position (Jake Ryan is on the NFI list), the Jags will need to make a roster move soon or move a player from the MIKE or WILL position there temporarily.

Onwunalu was entering his third season and had 10 career tackles to his name. He previously played for the Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers before being claimed off waivers by the Jags in April.
