Jaguars claim former 49ers LB James Onwualu off waivers

The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed former San Francisco 49ers linebacker James Onwualu off waivers Tuesday, bringing their roster to a total of 93 players.

Onwualu, 24, entered the league in 2017 as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers and spent a full season with them before being released in August of 2018. Months later, in November, he was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers and signed to their practice squad. Nearly a week later, he was promoted to the main roster prior to being waived this month.

While providing depth in the Jags’ linebacking corps, it’s expected he’ll predominantly get looks on special teams as he’s spent 87 snaps in that department. If he sticks to the roster all offseason, he’ll also get his share of looks on defense this preseason.
