Jags waive LB Malcolm Smith, re-sign LB Joe Giles-Harris to practice squad

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be on their bye week but the front office seemingly hasn’t taken a break. The team made a roster transaction Tuesday by waiving former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith, leaving a roster slot open on their 53-man roster. They also re-signed linebacker Joe Giles-Harris to their practice squad, putting them at a total nine players on the unit.

The Jags had a rash of injuries at the linebacker position during their game against the Cincinnati Bengals Week 7 and had to make several transactions heading into Week 8. With D.J. Alexander going on injured reserve and Quincy Williams (hamstring), Najee Goode (toe) and Leon Jacobs (hamstring) missing Week 8, the Jags brought in Smith, Donald Payne and temporally signed Giles-Harris from their practice squad before waiving him two days ago. Smith, who participated in two games with the Jags, wasn’t able to register any tackles during his time on the team.

Giles-Harris, on the other hand, is a player the Jags have shown they want to develop. He initially joined the Jags after April’s draft as an undrafted free agent and was able to make their initial 53-man roster before being waived a day later. However, the team seemingly liked what they saw from him in the preseason as he racked up 15 tackles while playing in all four games and starting in their preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons.
