Jacob Murphy 'still wanted' by Rangers as Steven Gerrard keeps tabs on Newcastle contract talks

Rangers still want to sign Jacob Murphy from Newcastle United, according to a report.

The winger was on a list of targets over the summer with MailSport first revealing news of Steven Gerrard's interest earlier this year.

But no move ever materialised and Murphy has earned himself some first team opportunities this season with Steve Bruce handing him game time and admitting he's been impressed.

He's out of contract next summer, though, and the Chronicle say Gerrard is keeping a close eye on his contract talks in the hope he can make a pre-contract move for him in January.

At 25, Rangers wouldn't need to pay any cross-border development fee for Murphy if he was to leave St James Park next summer.

The report states that Newcastle are desperate not to lose him on a bosman, even if he doesn't get regular first team football at the club this season.

The former Norwich winger cost the Magpies £12million when they snapped him up in 2017 but he's struggled to make a real impact at the club.

He did score a late equaliser in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend and Bruce has hinted at more first team action for him in the English Premier League this season.

Murphy spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and previously had a spell at West Brom.
