Jacob Davenport set for Hearts transfer 'talks' with Robbie Neilson keen on ex Manchester City midfielder

Hearts are reportedly set to hold talks with in-demand Jacob Davenport.

Robbie Neilson is keen to further add to his squad ahead of their European campaign this season. The Tynecastle boss wants another three new faces to ensure he has the numbers to cope with a demanding schedule and the former Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City man has emerged as a target.

The left-footed central midfielder is without a club after being released by Rovers having begun his career in City's academy. He was linked with a move to Aberdeen earlier this summer, and had a trial period with Reading, but wasn't offered a contract by the Royals. The Edinburgh Evening News now claim that the Jambos are keen to sit down with Davenport, who is a free agent. Neilson wants another option in the engine room with Beni Baningime still sidelined after suffering a cruciate ligament injury last season.

Austrian Peter Haring made his 100th appearance in maroon during yesterday’s 2-1 opening day win over Ross County, starting alongside Michael Smith. However, the Northern Irishman reverted to right wing back after Nathaniel Atkinson went off injured, with Jorge Grant slotting in alongside Haring.

Hearts were interested in signing former St Mirren loanee Connor Ronan earlier this summer, but that was dropped after Grant was signed from Peterborough United. Cammy Devlin is still working his way back to full fitness following a hamstring injury, and Davenport would add more depth in the deeper midfield positions, allowing Grant to play further forward.
