Jacob Collier fan's 'weekend ruined' after O2 academy staff wrongly told him gig was cancelled

A Jacob Collier fan had his 'weekend ruined' after staff members allegedly told him that the gig he attended was cancelled due to a power cut - only for it to go ahead that same night.

Paolo Hamam attended the Jacob Collier concert at around 7pm at Bristol's O2 Academy on June 4, but it was disrupted by a power outage at 7.50pm. The 36-year-old from Bridgend says that fans inside the venue were told that they needed to leave at around 8.15pm because the power cut meant the show could no longer go ahead.

As fans left the venue, Jacob Collier held an impromtu acoustic gig outside, but later that evening the real concert started, after Paolo and many other fans had already left. Paolo says he has not had any guidance from the O2 on whether they will be issuing refunds or re-scheduling the show.

He told Bristol Live: "I was really gutted just like anybody else. I was also disappointed with Jacob's decision to play anyway because how can that be fair when half of us went home?

"It's not about the money. If they rescheduled the concert I would be happy with that, rather than a refund, but at the very least they should say something about what they plan on doing.

"I'm very very disappointed and I just don't believe that it's fair. I was looking forward to it and I was waiting for almost a year to see him live."

Paolo says his ticket cost him £30 when he bought it last summer, but he is more frustrated that he missed the concert through no fault of his own.

"I'm just very disappointed. It practically ruined my weekend to be honest," he said.

Other people have also complained on social media that they were incorrectly told that the gig would not go ahead.

In a reply to a tweet written by the O2 Academy about the gig, a Twitter user called Nick wrote: "Your staff explicitly told us the show was cancelled. There was no doubt.

"After travelling from Wales to Bristol we travelled back again. Now we hear the show went ahead.

"And now you tweet for the first time about the situation all night. An utter shambles."

And Paul Manning also voiced his frustration and wrote: "Fully understand the need to evacuate the building safely, but went home disappointed to miss a show we had been looking forward to for months, and then when we get home we find that it went ahead so we had missed it."

The O2 Academy has been approached for comment.
