Chris Hughton rued his Brighton side’s inability to build on Beram Kayal’s goal after just 17 seconds and then to allow Huddersfield to hit back and earn a draw.
The Seagulls made an ideal start and Kayal struck. He ran unchallenged from the centre circle and made his way down the right before finding a team-mate and then beating Joe Murphy with a shot into the right-hand corner.
However, the Terriers improved dramatically after the interval and Jacob Butterfield equalised after 54 minutes, hitting the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
The result leaves Brighton second in the table, level on points with Ipswich after two wins and a draw from their first three matches while Huddersfield are 18th and still searching for their first win of the season.
Of whether he felt it was two points dropped, Hughton said: “I think you always do. I think in the first-half when we had a really good period we needed to score a second goal and that we are finding difficult at the moment. I think overall it was a fair result.
“You would expect in this league and certainly with a team like Huddersfield that they have got good options up front. It’s very difficult to keep the levels up for 90 minutes and we needed to get a second goal to alleviate a bit of pressure.”
Brighton dominated the first half, their pace and movement up front causing all sorts of problems with Kayal and Sam Baldock the chief tormentors. However, they failed to extend their lead and Huddersfield were a completely different proposition after the interval.
Chris Powell, the Town manager, said: “It was [very encouraging] and especially after such a tough, tough start. I’ve got to say of the players, to a man their efforts were excellent.”
