‘Jackie kind of took over’: Ralph Macchio, Ben Wang, and Jackie Chan talk fight sequences and ‘Karate Kid: Legends’

Karate Kid: Legends hits theaters this weekend and if you’re a fan of the franchise, you’re in for quite the treat. And I was lucky enough to talk with the cast of Legends about the film! And talk about legends, I spoke with Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan!

The film stars Ben Wang as Li, a young boy who moves to New York and studies Kung Fu and Karate despite his mother not wanting him to fight. He needs the help of Mr. Han (Chan) and Daniel (Macchio) to try to win the Five Burroughs. It is a tournament that brings the best of each burrough in New York City to all fight together and Li is trying to prove himself to his new bully, Connor (Aramis Knight).

But there is one fight that is not even about the tournament itself. When Daniel and Mr. Han are there to cheer on Li, they find themselves in a fight to protect their young fighter. So when speaking with Macchio and Chan about the fight, I asked about the rehearsal process and working together but apparently, Chan helped make the fight a reality.

Wang jumped in to say “Jackie kind of took over.” And Macchio agreed saying that Chan took over and “choreographed” what we ended up seeing in the movie. “That was the end of a long day,” Macchio said. He said that multiple scenes were shot that day and at the end of it, they had a big fight sequence and “thankfully we had Jackie. I mean, the stunt team was fantastic but we were figuring that out on the fly.”

For Chan, he said that it was what he was used to. “I’ve been doing those kind of things for- this year is my 64th year in the film industry. Every day on the film, on a movie set, if there’s anything I can help I help. You can tell the sun is going down, we’re running out the time I have to get in to help. The camera angle for me is too easy. I know how to do it.”
