Jack Wilshere in Rangers transfer admission as he concedes Steven Gerrard link-up wasn't in the works

Forthright Jack Wilshere admits Rangers never enquired about his availability before he returned to Bournemouth earlier this week.

The mercurial midfielder left West Ham at the close of the last transfer window and was strongly linked with a switch to Ibrox.

Bookies had Rangers as his most likely next destination and viewed it as a chance to reboot his career alongside his former England international teammate Steven Gerrard.

But a move north of the border never materialised and the 28-year-old conceded that no contact was made with the runaway Premiership leaders during his time as a free agent.

When asked directly if Rangers had made a move, Wilshere, taking part in a Twitter Q and A, simply responded: "Nope!"

Rangers are well stocked in the heart of the midfield with Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo, Steven Davies, Bongani Zungu, Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield all battling it out for three spots when they are are all fit.

Wilshere was regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation before a nightmare in jury run put paid to one of the most promising careers in recent English football.

And Rangers fans got an early glimpse of his burgeoning potential during the 2009 Emirates Cup where he ripped Walter Smith's side to shreds as a 17-year-old en route to a 3-0 win.
