Jack Harrison can 'step up' for Leeds United after Burnley goal boost

Kevin Phillips believes Jack Harrison’s goal in Leeds United’s 3-1 victory over Burnley could hand him the confidence to return to his best form.

Harrison netted the opener as the Whites moved eight points clear of yesterday’s opponents, in what could be a huge result in the context of this season’s relegation battle.

The 25-year-old has seen a major drop off in his output this season in comparison to last, with his goal against the Clarets his first of the season.

He has also provided just one assist, when he provided an excellent delivery for Daniel James to tap home his first for the club in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Last term, though, Harrison scored eight goals and provided a further eight assists in what was his first season of Premier League football.

His levels have not been the same since his permanent move from Manchester City, however former Birmingham City and Sunderland striker Phillips thinks Sunday could prove to be the catalyst for an improvement in form.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Harrison was quite brilliant last year.

“He hasn’t been anywhere near as effective as this season though which has surprised me.

“The second season is always more difficult though because people work you out, as a team and an individual. You need to come up with different ways of playing to combat that. The sign of a good player is one that is continually evolving and getting better.

“Harrison is undoubtedly a good player. It’s great that he got himself a goal. It will do his confidence the world of good.

“Leeds have struggled this season. They need players like Harrison to step up. Bielsa will see the goal as a massive plus.”
