British No 1 Jack Draper began his US Open campaign with a battling four-set win over qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a breakout run in New York last year, reaching a maiden grand slam semi-final and losing to eventual champion Jannik Sinner, and is among the favourites for a deep run this year - and to challenge the likes of Sinner and 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz.
An arm injury meant he missed the start of the American hard-court swing, but he looked sharp on his return to competition in last week’s mixed doubles tournament, when he reached the semi-finals alongside Jessica Pegula.
Draper looked a bit more uncomfortable at times as he was dragged into a fourth set by qualifier Gomez, who is ranked 206th in the world, but Draper ultimately prevailed, winning 6-4 7-5 6-7 6-2 in just over three hours.
Cameron Norrie is through to the second round after Sebastian Korda retired after going 7-5 6-4 down, but Australian Open champion and sixth seed Madison Keys is out after she was stunned by Renata Zarazua.

Jack Draper on his first-round US Open win
21:25 , Eleanor CrooksJack Draper endured a difficult return to the US Open but battled past qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez and into the second round.
The world number five was playing his first match since a shock loss to Marin Cilic at Wimbledon more than seven weeks ago, after which he was diagnosed with bone bruising in his left arm and forced to take time away from the court.
He eventually came through in four sets against 203rd-ranked Argentinian Gomez but it was a lot closer than he would have liked, with Draper eventually wrapping up a 6-4 7-5 6-7 (7) 6-2 victory after one minute over three hours.
"I wasn't too sure if I was going to make it here this year, my team did a great job," said Draper, who next faces Belgian Zizou Bergs.
"It wasn't my finest performance but credit to my opponent, he played some outstanding tennis and I look forward to hopefully improving as the tournament goes on.
"I'm not putting too much expectations on myself. I know if I can get that level back, I'm going to be tough to be beat."

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 6-7 6-2 Federico Agustin Gomez
21:02 , Jamie BraidwoodRelief, in the end, for Jack Draper as he sees off the challenge of qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez.
He was always expected to defeat an opponent making their debut at a grand slam main draw and ranked outside the top-200.
But there were some awkward moments in the third set as Draper played his first match since Wimbledon and amid uncertainty over his arm injury.
He ultimately prevailed.
BREAK! Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 6-7 5-2 Federico Agustin Gomez*
20:54 , Jamie BraidwoodOh that’s a big boost for Draper in his bid to reach the second-round. Finding his level again on serve means Draper can afford to be patient, and he takes his chance to break Gomez, just as the qualifier’s level drops with a series of errors.
One game away.
Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 6-7 2-1 Federico Agustin Gomez*
20:36 , Jamie BraidwoodDraper’s first-serve percentage was down at just over 50 per cent in the third set but his accuracy is already up to 80 per cent through his first two games.
Still on serve.
THIRD SET! Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 6-7 Federico Agustin Gomez
20:22 , Jamie BraidwoodGomez wins the tiebreak and Draper is dragged into a fourth! The British No 1 had a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreak but Gomez saved. The qualifier then takes his second opportunity at set point, winning the tiebreak on serve 9-7!
This is a concern for Draper, who was far from his best in that set, and will now have to get back to work in what is his first match since Wimbledon.

TIEBREAK! Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 6-6 Federico Agustin Gomez
20:11 , Jamie BraidwoodWe head to the tiebreak.
Draper would have taken this after falling 3-0 down in this set and he’ll want to just get this done in the breaker against the qualifier.
Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 5-5 Federico Agustin Gomez*
20:03 , Jamie BraidwoodThe third set could be going the distance. There are still some question marks over Draper but he looks a little livelier skipping about the baseline after holding serve.
Draper will be hoping Gomez’s hot-streak has calmed a little too.
BREAK! *Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 3-4 Federico Agustin Gomez
19:54 , Jamie BraidwoodGomez was playing some of his best tennis of the match and looked on the brink of moving 5-2 ahead in the third set.
Suddenly, the Argentine made back-to-back unforced errors from the the baseline to go from 40-30 to D-A and break point.
Draper stays solid on the baseline and Gomez puts a drop shot into the net. What a gift that is.
BREAK! *Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 0-3 Federico Agustin Gomez
19:38 , Jamie BraidwoodI wasn’t sure how Federico Agustin Gomez would respond to going two sets down. Here’s our answer.
The Argentine breaks Draper for the second time in three service games to jump into a lead in the third.
Draper’s struggles from the second set continue as he again makes a double fault.
Gomez then roars after the forehand winner and blasts a forehand winner to hold as he moves 3-0 ahead.
This just got interesting, and potentially awkward for the fifth seed.
SECOND SET! Jack Draper 6-4 7-5 Federico Agustin Gomez*
19:24 , Jamie BraidwoodNo mistake from Draper this time! He puts away a forehand down the line and then follows it with an ace.
There was a wobble there midway through, but Draper gets it done and is now in a commanding position.
BREAK! *Jack Draper 6-4 6-5 Federico Agustin Gomez
19:21 , Jamie BraidwoodHaving toiled to get back on serve, Gomez make a couple of unforced errors to hand Draper a couple of break points again.
Gomez saves the first and battles from the baseline in the second, but finds the net-tape!
Draper is not looking as powerful behind the forehand - but he will have the chance to serve for the set for a second time.
BREAK! Jack Draper 6-4 5-5 Federico Agustin Gomez*
19:17 , Jamie BraidwoodHe struggled through the last game. Now Draper’s in trouble again. Another double fault is followed by a drop shot into the net.
Two break points for Gomez, and the Argentine roars as he gets it! Draper goes long and suddenly the second set is level again!
Draper had break points for a 4-1 lead.

Jack Draper 6-4 5-3 Federico Agustin Gomez*
19:10 , Jamie BraidwoodDraper saves two break points and survives three double faults to hold.
Gomez howls in frustration that he’s not taken that opportunity.
*Jack Draper 6-4 4-3 Federico Agustin Gomez
19:06 , Jamie BraidwoodOof. An ugly old game from Draper with three double faults, all on the deuce side, to give Gomez break point.
The point is there for Gomez but he fires long on the forehand! Draper is trying to fire himself up.
Gomez unleashes his frustration on an unbelievable forehand return winner, off Draper’s second serve.
Draper saves the second break point with a second-serve ace out wide! Deuce again.
Jack Draper 6-4 4-2 Federico Agustin Gomez*
19:00 , Jamie BraidwoodDraper scorches his biggest forehand winner of the match so far and follows it with an ace to hold to love. It’s currently hard to see how Gomez can break Draper and he’s yet to be seriously asked a question apart from a couple of 0-30s.
*Jack Draper 6-4 3-2 Federico Agustin Gomez
18:56 , Jamie BraidwoodThe writing looked to be on the wall for Gomez as he faced three break points across the game but replied with some fine hitting and heavy forehands to save them and then hold.

Jack Draper 6-4 3-1 Federico Agustin Gomez*
18:48 , Jamie BraidwoodI think the power is definitely still there in Draper’s forehand despite those recent troubles with his arm. He’s bullying Gomez when he can step into that forehand and get it into play.
Draper holds, via a deuce.
BREAK! *Jack Draper 6-4 2-1 Federico Agustin Gomez
18:42 , Jamie BraidwoodA wild swing from Gomez on a simple forehand from the baseline gives Draper a look at two early break points.
Draper bunts the return back, then thumps a powerful forehand that has Gomez scrambling.
Too strong from Draper and he pops the volley over to take the break. Still early but he’s looking better and better.

Jack Draper 6-4 1-1 Federico Agustin Gomez*
18:39 , Jamie BraidwoodGood hold from Draper from 0-30 down, including a clever little inside-out drop shot on 15-30.
Gomez draws some applause from Draper after connecting with an audacious behind-the-back shot.
Draper is there to pop the volley over.
*Jack Draper 6-4 0-1 Federico Agustin Gomez
18:36 , Jamie BraidwoodGomez made some silly mistakes in the game in which he was broken in the first set, but the Argentine clearly has a weapon of a serve. He races to a love-hold to stat the second set.
FIRST SET! Jack Draper 6-4 Federico Agustin Gomez*
18:31 , Jamie BraidwoodBeautiful serving from Draper. He finds the ace out wide, kicking wildly to the right, and then thunders another down the middle.
Two set points: Gomez slices long and Draper is looking very comfortable as he marches back to his chair a set ahead.

*Jack Draper 5-4 Federico Agustin Gomez
18:27 , Jamie BraidwoodDraper hits his biggest forehand winner of the match so far but Gomez holds to force the British No 1 to serve out the set.
That left arm looked ok there as Draper blasted the winner.
Jack Draper 5-3 Federico Agustin Gomez*
18:24 , Jamie BraidwoodFar from the tidiest game from Draper but he gets through it to consolidate the break as Gomez blasts wide on the forehand.
Draper’s serve bailed him out after a couple of misses on the forehand side and a strange drop shot.
Some rustiness is expected of course.
BREAK! *Jack Draper 4-3 Federico Agustin Gomez
18:17 , Jamie BraidwoodFrom 0-30, Draper finds a couple of excellent deep returns to break to love!
He found the baseline with a backhand that Gomez had to run back to reach - the Argentine then comically goes for the tweener, which sails long.
Draper then converts the break points as he works his way into the rally and puts away the smash.
The gulf is ranking between Draper and Gomez is very clear when the British No 1 finds his return.
Jack Draper 3-3 Federico Agustin Gomez*
18:14 , Jamie BraidwoodGomez reaches 142mph on serve after Draper had a look at the Argentine’s game at 0-30.
Draper replies with a love-hold, and has won all 11 of his first-serve points so far.
The Brit is getting more returns in against Gomez so far, despite the qualifier’s impressive speed.
Cameron Norrie through to the second round of US Open!
18:09 , Jamie BraidwoodCameron Norrie is through after Sebastian Korda retires after losing the second set!
Well, that’s not too much of a surprise. Korda had pulled out of his last match at Winston-Salem and has barely played since the French Open.
The American also took a timeout for a lower back issue and threw in the towel after going 7-5 6-4 down.
But a good starting result for Norrie.
Jack Draper 2-2 Federico Agustin Gomez*
18:07 , Jamie BraidwoodDraper’s keen to show his first serve is pretty powerful too. He rattles through his service game with a couple of aces, with Gomez struggling against some of Draper’s lefty angles.
*Jack Draper 1-2 Federico Agustin Gomez
18:03 , Jamie BraidwoodGomez’s first serve is huge! The Argentine has already thrown down a 136mph ace. He’s settled well on his US Open main draw debut.
SECOND SET! Cameron Norrie 7-5 6-4 Sebastian Korda
18:00 , Jamie BraidwoodCameron Norrie is flying against the American Sebastian Korda and finally converts one of his set points to move 7-5 6-4 up.
Norrie had lost his previous two matches in Toronto and Cincinnati before arriving at the US Open but this is some start.
Korda, it has to be said, has played just one tournament since the French Open and withdrew from Winston-Salem due to illness.
*Jack Draper 0-1 Federico Agustin Gomez
17:58 , Jamie BraidwoodGomez plays at a quick pace and has a rocket of a first serve, despite not being the biggest player.
He holds in an opening game that did not see much of a rally.
Jack Draper v Federico Agustin Gomez
17:55 , Jamie BraidwoodDraper won the toss and elected to receive.

Jack Draper v Federico Agustin Gomez
17:51 , Jamie BraidwoodHere we go! Jack Draper comes out onto the Louis Armstrong Arena, where it looks to be a very hot day and many spectators are taking the chance to take a bit of shade.
Draper’s wearing an arm sleeve on his left arm and it will be interesting to see how he is physically as the British No 1 opens against qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez.
Draper hopes his love for New York can result in another successful US Open
17:43 , Jamie BraidwoodJack Draper is hoping more love from the New York crowd can help him replicate his brilliant breakthrough run at the US Open.
The 23-year-old announced himself on the world stage at Flushing Meadows 12 months ago with a run to the semi-finals and returns as the world number five and a bona fide title challenger.
The build-up has not been what he would have wanted, with bone bruising in his left arm diagnosed after Wimbledon keeping him out for more than seven weeks.
He has not played a competitive singles match since losing to Marin Cilic in the second round at Wimbledon, after which the Londoner admitted he does not yet feel at home on grass – something that is not the case thousands of miles across the Atlantic.

Victoria Mboko knocked out of US Open by Barbora Krejcikova
17:35 , Jamie BraidwoodGame, set and match! An early exit form the US Open for the 18-year-old Victoria Mboko, who arrived at the US Open with a lot of expectation after winning a breakthrough title in Montreal but badly struggled with a wrist injury, that looked to have been picked up during that title run.
There’s no shame in losing to a grand slam champion in Barbora Krejcikova, either. Good to see the Czech back playing well after struggling with injury at Wimbledon. She takes out the 22nd seed and has a nice draw ahead of her too.
Jack Draper’s match will be up next.

Jack Draper on arm injury before beginning US Open campaign
17:31 , Jamie BraidwoodJack Draper on the arm injury that forced the British No 1 to take a number of weeks off after Wimbledon. Sounds as if Draper is prepared to play through some pain if needed.
“I have been training a lot the last month or so, physically really pushed myself hard, and that makes me feel mentally really good about myself,” said the 23-year-old.
“I’m just really excited to be back here at the US Open and back competing, doing what I like doing best.
“It’s an injury which takes time to heal. It might be giving me some discomfort, that’s for sure. It’s not something which I’m going to go out on Monday and feel like it’s holding me back at all.”
Victoria Mboko struggling against Barbora Krejcikova
17:10 , Jamie BraidwoodIt does not look like it will be Victoria Mboko’s day on Louis Armstrong Stadium. The winner in Montreal was tipped for a breakthrough US Open but trail Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 3-0.
The Canadian is struggling with a wrist injury while Krejcikova, the 2024 Wimbledon champion, is finding some form after losing in the first round of her title defence last month.

SET! Cameron Norrie 7-5 Sebastian Korda
17:08 , Jamie BraidwoodIt’s advantage Cameron Norrie out on Stadium 17.
He takes the opening set 7-5 against Sebastian Korda of the United States.
Norrie has not been in great form since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals but he loves the grand slams and usually always turns up.

Emma Raducanu reveals why rapid US Open win was ‘extra special’
16:55 , Flo CliffordOne of the seeds already out is 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova, whose unexpected three-set loss to the rapidly-rising Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen has - in theory - smoothed the path for Emma Raducanu, her next opponent.
Raducanu looked back to her best as she claimed her first victory at the US Open since winning the title in 2021, breezing past another qualifier, Japan’s Ena Shibahara, in just 62 minutes.
The 22-year-old said she is returning to the US Open in a better place, having enjoyed a consistent run on the court and showing some decent form ahead of the final grand slam of the year.

US Open live updates
16:40 , Flo CliffordBarbora Krejcikova broke in the opening game of her first-round encounter with talented Canadian Victoria Mboko, and leads the 22nd seed 3-2 on Louis Armstrong.
Britain’s Cam Norrie is locked in what could be a lengthy tussle with American Seb Korda; that’s at 3-3, on serve in the first set.
And Czech legend Petra Kvitova, playing in her last tournament before retirement, has lost the first set 6-1 to Diane Parry and could be making a swifter farewell than she’d hoped for in New York.
US Open day two schedule
16:30 , Flo CliffordPlay has begun on Louis Armstrong Stadium and the outside courts, with former Wimbledon and French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova opening against talented teenager and 22nd seed Victoria Mboko.
Jack Draper is scheduled to play after the conclusion of that match, and is likely to be on court from around 5.30pm BST, depending on how much time the previous encounter takes.
The sadness of a fading tennis generation leaves US Open question
16:20 , Flo CliffordMedvedev’s total collapse in grand slams this year is indicative of a wider malaise among the ‘90s generation of male tennis players.
He, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas were all knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon, and look leagues away from their best, which has seen all three reach major finals and Medvedev win one. Jamie Braidwood explored just what has gone wrong with this lost generation of talent:

Daniil Medvedev expecting ‘big fine’ after US Open outburst
16:10 , Flo CliffordMore from Medvedev, who has now lost in the first round of a grand slam for the third time in a row. Benjamin Bonzi was responsible for his first-round exit at Wimbledon too.
Medvedev criticised umpire Greg Allensworth, repeatedly shouting, “What did Reilly Opelka say?” - alluding to the American’s previous comments when he called Allensworth the worst umpire on tour.
Asked by press about his outburst, Medvedev said, “I’m getting a big fine enough, so if I speak, I’m in big trouble, so I’m not going to speak.”

US Open match descends into chaos and sparks Daniil Medvedev meltdown
16:00 , Flo CliffordThe big story of last night’s action was of course the antics of Daniil Medvedev, whose first-round match descended into chaos when a photographer came onto the court as the Russian faced match point.
A furious Medvedev brought the first-round match to a standstill with a spectacular meltdown as his opponent, Benjamin Bonzi, was awarded a first serve after the photographer’s intrusion.
And while the former champion saved the match point and fought back, winning the next two sets to force a decider, he was eventually knocked out 6-3 7-5 6-7(5) 0-6 6-4 by the Frenchman.

Novak Djokovic admits physical ‘concern’ after struggling to first-round US Open win
15:50 , Flo CliffordFor those who missed yesterday’s action, one of the major talking points was Novak Djokovic, who admitted he was concerned by his physical difficulties after battling past young American Learner Tien in the opening round of the US Open.
The Serbian won in straight sets but was made to work for it, especially in an 82-minute second set.
“It’s slightly a concern,” he said afterwards. “I don’t have any injury or anything. I just struggled a lot to stay in long exchanges and recover after points.”
