Jack Draper resumed his Queen’s campaign today with a tricky victory against world No 21, Alexei Popyrin.
The Australian is best known for dismantling Novak Djokovic at the US Open last year and represents a step up in class from Draper’s first-round opponent, Jenson Brooksby, who he swept aside in straight sets.
Also in action today are British No 7 Dan Evans - who has just received a wildcard for Wimbledon - against American Brandon Nakashima, as well as huge-serving 19-year-old Jakub Mensik, who beat Cameron Norrie in the first round.
He takes on Roberto Bautista Agut first on the Andy Murray Arena, with Draper scheduled after that.
There are plenty of Brits in doubles action too, with Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash kicking off play on Court One, with two-time grand slam champions Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara following them.

Carlos Alcaraz ‘super excited’ for Emma Raducanu dream team – as Spaniard progresses at Queen’s
Wednesday 18 June 2025 13:30 , Flo CliffordKieran Jackson has more on the new-look mixed doubles tournament, and how Carlos Alcaraz got on in his Queen’s opener:
A fortnight out from Wimbledon, with All England Club defending champion Carlos Alcaraz beginning his grass-court campaign in the 27C sunshine at Queen’s Club, it is highly unusual for another grand slam to steal the limelight. Yet in New York, they don’t care what feathers they ruffle on the streets of Kensington or Southfields.
Earlier this year, the US Open announced a new-look mixed doubles tournament to take place in the week preceding the major. With a winning purse of $1m, top singles players have been encouraged to participate in a two-day, quick-scoring format. For the tradition of grand-slam tennis, it is quite the radical shake-up, while for doubles specialists, some reliant on the earnings of mixed tennis, it amounts to something close to a slap in the face.
Yet on these shores, there’s no doubting where the main stardust pairing lies. Five-time major winner Alcaraz, the sport’s hottest property right now, is set to compete in a box-office duo alongside British No 1 Emma Raducanu.

Dan Evans rolls back the years to dismantle Frances Tiafoe in first upset at Queen’s
Wednesday 18 June 2025 12:20 , Flo CliffordDan Evans is also in action later on today, after his brilliant first-round win opened the tournament on Monday:
Only two summers ago Dan Evans was up at a career-high ranking of 21st in the world. Now the Birmingham-born player is just a fraction inside the top 200, having dropped out of it altogether earlier this year.
His season so far has been one of hard grind with little reward, spent largely plugging away on the lower-tier, lower-profile Challenger tour. He has only won one ATP-level match this season, on the grass last week at ’s-Hertogenbosch, where he came through qualifying to reach the last-16.
However, somewhere the Brit always comes alive is on the grass. And under bright Queen’s Club sunshine on the Andy Murray Arena, Evans produced some of his best inventive, classy tennis to dismantle the world No 13 and seventh seed Frances Tiafoe. His 7-5, 6-2 win was his first top-20 Tour-level victory since October 2023 (coincidentally, also over the American).

Jack Draper and Carlos Alcaraz resume budding rivalry at Queen’s as British No 1 eyes top spot
Wednesday 18 June 2025 12:12 , Flo CliffordThis time a year ago, British observers at Queen’s Club crossed their fingers and hoped for the best as Jack Draper faced defending champion and super-talent Carlos Alcaraz in the last 16. It was an unenviable draw, to say the least.
But Draper rose to the occasion, dispatching the Spaniard in straight sets, on a day that marked his transformation from young prospect to serious player.
A week earlier, he had won his maiden ATP title, on the grass in Stuttgart, defeating former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini. If 2024 was to prove his breakout year, 2025, so far, has sent him into the stratosphere.

How are the top seeds faring?
Wednesday 18 June 2025 12:06 , Flo CliffordThe Queen’s first round has been something of a bloodbath, with half of the eight seeds knocked out in their first match in west London.
Fifth seed Alex de Minaur was outclassed by Czech Jiri Lehecka in straight sets; sixth seed Ben Shelton was ousted by lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech in two tie-breaks; and British wildcard Dan Evans memorably knocked out seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in front of a jubilant home crowd.
The biggest casualty has been third seed Taylor Fritz, fresh from winning a grass-court title in Stuttgart last week. He was beaten by unorthodox Frenchman Corentin Moutet 7-6, 6-7, 5-7.
That leaves top seed Carlos Alcaraz, second seed Jack Draper, fourth seed Holger Rune, and eighth seed Jakub Mensik still in contention.

Jack Draper begins bid to emulate Andy Murray at Queen’s Club with opening win
Wednesday 18 June 2025 11:52 , Flo CliffordJack Draper began his bid to emulate Andy Murray at Queen’s Club by winning his first match on the court named after the five-time champion.
The British number one, seeded second at this year’s HSBC Championships, is attempting to become only the second home men’s singles winner in the Open era after Murray.
Draper got his grass-court season off to a solid start on the Andy Murray Arena with a 6-3 6-1 win over American Jenson Brooksby, before poking fun at his mentor, who retired last year.
“Can’t get rid of this guy,” he joked. “Andy is an unbelievable guy, someone I’m very inspired by and I wouldn’t be where I am without him.
“I definitely miss him on the Tour. Thank you Andy, this court deserves to be named after you.”

Jack Draper v Alexei Popyrin
Wednesday 18 June 2025 11:46 , Flo CliffordJack Draper continues his grass-court season today on an action-packed day three at the Queen’s Club.
The Brit reached the last-16 last year, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in a coming-of-age victory that marked his arrival onto the biggest stage.
This year Draper is the second seed rather than an up-and-coming challenger, and will have all eyes on him as a major contender for the title.
He opened his campaign with an assured 6-3, 6-1 win over the tricky, unorthodox American Jenson Brooksby, who Draper beat earlier this year en route to his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells.
Today he faces world No 21 Alexei Popyrin, who memorably beat Novak Djokovic at the US Open last year, and who represents a more formidable challenge. The Australian beat compatriot Aleksandar Vukic in the first round.
