The Super Mario Galaxy Movie star Jack Black may have just confirmed a threequel for everyone's favorite plumber and pals – and a release window.
"Don't be surprised if you hear that coming out next time. It's good," the Bowser voice actor said during an interview with Cinemex after he and his co-star Donald Glover freestyled a song about Bowser. "In 2029."
Now, a third Mario movie hasn't been announced yet, much less a release date, but Black's comment makes it seems like one is definitely on the way. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was confirmed in March 2024, almost a year after the original movie's release. However, development was stalled by the WGA writers' strike in 2023, so it's possible that a potential threequel announcement could arrive on a much shorter timeline. The first two movies were released three years apart, so 2029 would be the logical release window for a third film, too.
Of course, there's a chance that Black is just speculating, like us, and assumed that another sequel would arrive on the big screen in 2029. We'll just have to wait and see. If the success of the first movie is anything to go by, though, it seems like a logical choice for Universal Studios and Nintendo. The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the highest-grossing video game movie of all time when it hit theaters in April 2023, bringing in over $500 million in its first two weeks.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back Black as Bowser, Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, as well as adding some new voices to the mix: Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters on April 1. For more, check out our guide to the other upcoming video game movies on the way in 2026 and beyond.
