This Morning has been flooded with praise after the show made a major change alongside Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. The hosting duo were back at the helm of the ITV daytime programme on Thursday (October 6) for their last show of the week.
In a This Morning first, the daytime show welcomed deaf cook Yvonne Cobb to the studio kitchen for its first live deaf cookery item alongside hosts Phillip and Holly. And as the hosts sat in front of their plates for the Tex-Mex favourite, spicy chimichangas, viewers will have noticed more people in the studio.
Yvonne took over the kitchen while Holly and Phillip were joined by an interpreter, named Pascal, while another interpreter, Sandy, appeared on the screen for deaf viewers watching at home.
Holly mentioned that accessing recipes can be difficult for deaf people before requesting an explanation as to why.
Explaining the show's first deaf cookery segment in its 34-year run, Holly, 41, said earlier in the programme: "For the first time today we have a deaf cook who will use British Sign Language to make a dish live on air, so you might have noticed Pascal next to us who will be interpreting for Yvonne throughout the morning, and we’ve also got Sandy who will also be signing for you [at home]."
Phillip then used some sign language that he had learnt to say: "So, what are you cooking today?" To which Yvonne replied: "Beautifully signed! I’m making a Tex Mex dish this morning with a nice little twist, so it’s Chimichangas… and I will be teaching you some sign language!"
During the cooking segment, Yvonne taught Phillip and Holly how to sign for the words oil, chicken, and garlic. Yvonne said: "I’m trying really hard to make sure there’s more sign language on television, and to ensure that I’m signing the recipes… I’ve been very honoured over the years that many young children and older deaf people are feeling more confident in the kitchen as a result of my cookery school classes."
She added: "This is my dream come true that I’m here. I’m so proud of being deaf, that’s who I am so for me deafness is something I embrace. It’s a privilege for me to be here with you using my language and I do hope that it will inspire others to learn sign language."
And This Morning viewers were delighted with the change and encoruaged the show to do more. Slowdive singer Rachel Goswell said: "#ThisMorning great seeing Yvonne on and I’m learning some new signs #bsl. More of this please!"
