ITV The Chase's Anne Hegerty in awe of 'utterly sensational' Merseyside player

The Chase's Anne Hegerty was in shock after a Merseyside contestant stole the show.

Mark from Wirral was on the show that aired today, alongside Peter, Kate and Gill, all aiming to beat The Governess.

Up first was Mark who actually didn't know he was coming on the show.

Mark explained that whilst he was in hospital with appendicitis, his colleagues Sue and Matt signed him up for the programme.

Bradley Walsh commended Mark (ITV)

Back at home, the 47-year-old is part of a local quiz league - but on this occasion he was hoping to win big and treat himself to a holiday in Canada.

But no one expected what happened next, as he smashed the cash builder securing £9,000.

Host Bradley Walsh was in awe, he said: "What a start, unbelievable", whilst giving Mark a round of applause.

Anne added: "Very, very, very good indeed."

During the head-to-head, Mark had no trouble answering some very difficult question to gain a place in the final round.

Anne said: "I'm always full of respect for Merseyside quizzers, they have some of the best quiz leagues in Britain.

"I had a suspicion before I came up the stairs that I wouldn't catch you because you're a superb player."

And viewers were also in agreement as they took to Twitter to commend Mark.

Ben Church said: "He's very good."

Danno tweeted: "Great start. Respect."

Chris Parish wrote: "Blokes on fire - £9k in cash builder."

Syad said: "Good player number one - 9k amazing."

Another tweeted: "Well done mark you were clearly on your own there lad."

And James Doe said: "Mark. That was utterly sensational."

Mark's hard work paid off as he won £13k with his fellow contestants Gill and Peter.
