ITV The Chase fans in hysterics at contestant's answer about a very common phrase

Fans of award-winning gameshow The Chase were left in hysterics this evening at a contestant's answer.

Retired prison officer Alan had already banked a respectable £6,000 in the cash builder when he took on Jenny Ryan.

The 64-year-old was hoping to take the money back to the team, but was momentarily thrown by a question about a common phrase.

Host, Bradley Walsh said: "Which of these phrases mean to publicly criticise or express contempt for someone?

"A, Throw rain, B, Throw shade, or C, Throw wind?"

Admitting he had never head of the term before, Alan from Newcastle thought it could be 'throw rain' which caused hilarity among The Chase fans on Twitter.

One, @DrSkyrme said: "Throw rain? PMSL"

Another, @cjsweeting said: "Who’s never heard of the term throw shade? Jesus."

A third, @Flat__l1ned said: "Throw rain [laughing emoji]."

The Vixen knew the answer was 'throw shade' and went onto explain it comes from the drag community.

But Alan's small gaffe didn't stop him taking his six grand back to the team and was later joined by 52-year-old web designer Sally with her £7,000.

Together that scored 17 points in the final chase, but Jenny Ryan caught them and they left with nothing.

*The Chase is on ITV1, weekdays from 5pm
