ITV's Doc Martin series 10: Everything we know so far about the final series including cast, plot and documentary

The ever-so serious, grumpy but much-loved Doc Martin has been on our screens since 2004 and filming for its final series is currently taking place in Cornwall.

It was announced in September 2020, that the 10th series would be the Doc's final and due to the pandemic filming has been on pause until February 2022 when the cast could return to Port Isaac.

At the end of series nine in 2019, viewers saw Dr Martin Ellingham played by Martin Clunes resign from his role as GP in the fictional town of Portwenn after having his career scrutinised because of his phobia of blood.

In the new and final series, ITV have teased what's in store, saying: "This final series sees the Doc making efforts to overcome his phobia, and beginning to question whether he made the right decision about resigning. He and Louisa have also welcomed a baby daughter, Mary Elizabeth, a sister for four-year-old James Henry.

"With Louisa pursuing her new career as a child counsellor in his old surgery, the Doc is left literally holding the baby, and indulging his hobby of repairing clocks on the kitchen table. But does he really want his old job back?"

Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming series and Christmas special...

When will the final series of Doc Martin air?

There is no confirmed air date for the series just yet, but we do know that the final series will contain eight brand new episodes.

The cast and crew are also filming a Christmas special which ITV and producers Buffalo Pictures have said will "bid a final farewell to Doc Martin".

This seems to suggest that the final series could be aired in late 2022 with the Christmas episode being the last we see of the Doc, his family and villagers of Portwenn - but we'll have to wait a bit longer for an official release date.

And that's not all, Buffalo Pictures are also producing a documentary for ITV, which has provisionally been titled Doc Martin – A Celebration.

The documentary will not only give a glimpse of the behind the scenes action on the final series but will also highlight the longevity of the production and its impact on fans across the globe.

We'll keep you updated with any further details as and when it is announced.

Speaking of returning to film the final series on February 17, Martin Clunes said: “I have loved going to Cornwall to make Doc Martin over the last 18 years, and I have looked forward to returning to this beautiful county this year for the tenth and final series.

"The people of Cornwall, and Port Isaac in particular, have always been so helpful to us when we are making the series. We have some great story lines for the new series, and for the Christmas special, which I hope Doc Martin fans will love.

"I shall miss Cornwall, and all the lovely people we have worked with. But it is the right time to say farewell to the Doc, and Portwenn.”
