ITV Good Morning Britain hosts taken aback as warning issued to anyone who buys eggs

Good Morning Britain hosts were taken aback as a guest issued a warning to anyone buying a range of household essentials.

Today's episode of the ITV news programme was hosted by Charlotte Hawkins and Ed Balls. The show covered the ongoing cost of living crisis as consumer journalist Harry Wallop demonstrated the sharp rise in food inflation.

The guest appeared on the show with a basket of kitchen basics that included eggs, bread, milks pasta, butter and bananas. He explained how figures from the Office of National Statistics show shoppers could have bought the items for a total of £8.40 based on average prices last year.

Charlotte was shocked when the guest revealed how sharply these have increased in just 12 months. He said: "If you wanted to buy that basket now, your £8.40 would now cost you £10.83."

Harry specified the acclerating cost of eggs and butter as a particular point of concern. He said: "Eggs have gone up so much. A dozen eggs used to be £2.40 a year ago. In the space of a year it's gone up to £3.29. That's a third. It's really, really high.

"Everyone has noticed the price of a pack of butter go up. £1.83 and it is now above £2.40. Some big brands have been shriking their packs of butter too."

The commentator explained the rate of inflation has shown signs of slowing down but it is nowhere near to falling to what prices were a year ago. He explained that prices have increased due to Brexit and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He added: "A lot of the energy prices are just higher, a lot of the labour costs of hiring people at supermarkets is higher."
