ITV Emmerdale's Danny Miller clears up on-stage swipe to Stephen Mulhern at NTAs that left fans confused

Danny Miller has cleared up an apparent swipe he made at TV star Stephen Mulhern during the National Television Awards (NTAs). The Emmerdale actor confused viewers with the "unnecessary" comment on stage after I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! won the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award last night (October 14).

The ITV soap star, who won I'm A Celeb last year, led his 2021 castmates up to collect the gong after the show's hosts, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, both pulled out of the awards ceremony due to contracting Covid. I'm A Celeb beat Saturday Night Takeaway, which Ant and Dec also host, Taskmaster and The Graham Norton Show for the award.

But he raised eyebrows with a remark during the acceptance speech about Stephen, who was sitting in the audience, reports Manchester Evening News. Danny, who is best known for playing Aaron Dingle on Emmerdale, said: "Just on behalf of Ant and Dec who unfortunately have Covid so they can't be here tonight.

"Stephen Mulhern is in the crowd so not sure why he hasn't accepted the award on behalf of them." The camera then locked on to the TV star who pulled a funny face in response.

NTAs viewer took to social media to question the comment. @Beckycoll23 tweeted: "What was that dig at Stephen Mulhern about? He obviously didn't come and accept the award on their behalf because he's got nothing to do with I'm a Celeb? Seems an [unnecessary] comment by Danny..."

@Twig9876 posted: "Well Danny’s speech was ….. surprised face of Stephen [Mulhern]. Why would he have collected the award for Ant & Dec. #ntawards." @DavidMackayy added: "Why was Danny so shady towards Steven Mulhern there? 'Not sure why he isn't up here?' #NTAs."

However, it seems it was all in good fun after Danny posted a smiling selfie with Stephen at the NTAs. He wrote: "Don't believe everything you read. A good friend and a personal joke @Stephenmulhern." It was part of a series of snaps from the night shared on his Instagram stories.

Danny also posted a photo of himself posing with the award in front of the stage on his Instagram story. He wrote: "Thanks to everyone who voted, means the world. And a privilege to pick this up on behalf of the finest @antanddec @officialntas. What a show, what a production, still can’t believe I had the privilege to take part!"
