ITV Coronation Street fans left with the same concern after heartbreaking death scenes as they make demand for 'first'

Coronation Street fans have been left with the same concern after witnessing a tragic death. Viewers of the ITV soap were warned of upsetting scenes before Wednesday night's episode (March 22) as Evelyn Plummer was forced to have her beloved greyhound Cerberus put to sleep after he fell seriously ill.

Earlier this week fans saw Evelyn, played by Maureen Lipman, pay Roy Cropper a visit in the cafe with her trusted Cerberus in tow. Roy was left apologising for missing Evelyn's birthday party and opened up to her about Carla Connor's recent problems which have seen her leave Weatherfield after fearing her psychosis returned, not knowing she is being drugged with LSD by Stephen Reid.

The pair chatted for a while before Evelyn decided to leave, calling Cerberus from behind the Roys Rolls counter. Later, at home with Fiz Stape, Evelyn appeared concerned when her beloved pooch showed no interest in his tea.

And with Cerberus not getting any better, a concerned Tyrone Dobbs insisted that he and his gran took him to the vets. When the vet suggested food poisoning, a guilty Roy revealed he'd dropped an Eccles cake in the café and feared Cerberus may have eaten it. And the distressed dog owner told her pal that if anything happens to her pooch, she'd never forgive him.

She then received a phone call and dashed back to the vets where she was told Cerberus was suffering from kidney failure. The vet said Cerberus was unlikely to improve due his age and the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep. Evelyn finally agreed to the devastating move and viewers watched as Tyrone said his goodbyes while Evelyn remained with her companion until the very end.

Corrie fans were left devastated by the scenes, with many in tears and unable to watch as they were reminded of their own pet losses. Others, however, were concerned for the real dog playing Cerberus after suggesting he deserved a Bafta award for his performance.

@emmiegibbs said; "Please say the dog who plays him is ok." @mlew90 commented: "So heartbreaking but I don’t like that this has effected Roy and Evelyn too. Is the dog actually OK? Genuinely hoping he is!"@spinoutdaz tweeted: "I hope #Corrie put a video or pictures up of the dog that played Cerberus after filming had finished on his final scenes. just so everyone can see that he is ok."

Some, however, were trying to point out that Cerberus shouldn't have been in the cafe in the first place. @janetjeans said: "So sad I've held two of my dogs whilst they have been put to sleep. In Roy's defence though are dogs even allowed in cafes!!"

There was also plenty of praise for Evelyn actress Maureen with fans wanting her to bag some awards. @Zombiechick1967 tweeted: "Give Maureen Lipman any awards going because she deserves them all after that!! #Corrie #CoronationStreet@40SomethingTalk said: "@itvcorrie Maureen Lipman deserves awards for tonight's episode. Having been through what Evelyn is going through I know the raw emotion is so real. The loss of a beloved pet is gut wrenching. #Corrie."

@jonnymgdraws wrote: "Give Maureen Lipman ALL the awards! #corrie #coronationstreet But they don't want her to be on stage alone, it seems. @ladysarah69777 shared: "#corrie get Cerberus a British Soap Award."

@Charlottesayshi posted: "Has a dog ever won a soap award? If not that dog definitely deserves one #Corrie." @stephohara tweeted: "Soap award for Cerberus please @itvcorrie #corrie." @PhilYogi shared: "Next soap awards. If Cerberus isn’t up for best actor it’s a disgrace #corrie #coronationstreet." @power2transfor1 added: "The dog should win the best actor award at the soap awards !!! #Corrie."
