'It's not pleasant' - manager explains being replaced by Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor at Borussia Dortmund has explained the discovery he was being replaced while preparing for a cup final.

Liverpool boss Klopp spent seven years in charge at Dortmund before moving to Anfield in 2015.

He had succeeded former Germany international Thomas Doll, who was removed from his position in 2008 despite reaching the German Cup final.

And Doll has revealed how the build-up to the match against Bayern Munich wasn’t helped by strong rumours he was about to be axed.

“It is not pleasant to hear something like that just before such an important game, but nobody from the club contacted me about it,” Doll said to Goal and Spox.

“Aki Watzke (Dortmund’s CEO) and I only sat down after the season and decided that a fresh start would be best for BVB.

“My focus is always on the here and now and you could see in the final that the whole team was at the top.

“Unfortunately we lost 2-1 in extra time, otherwise it would have been a nice reward after all the bad games in the Bundesliga.”

Doll has had five managerial jobs since, most recently with APOEL in Cyprus last year.
