It's judgement day for the Broadmarsh Centre - and Nottingham wants answers

Today is the day it could all finally go wrong for the Broadmarsh shopping centre.

Anyone walking into our city now is quite rightly shocked by what they see. On one side, the library and car park development is progressing at a fantastic rate. But on the other, we have what was supposed to be the jewel in Nottingham's Southside regeneration crown.

Instead it looks like a bomb site. Half pulled down, its innards spilling out, the Broadmarsh centre is a disgrace.

Contractors removed their scaffolding days ago, laying bare the scale of what our city now has to salvage.

We were promised a sparkling new retail and leisure facility, complete with bowling alley and cinema. Finally, the blot on our city's landscape would be something to be proud of.

Instead, we find ourselves at a crossroads, and no one seems to know which way we're turning next.

Today, Broadmarsh owner intu's loan waiver agreement runs out. Will they fall into administration? And what then? Who will take on this colossal project?

We've waited 20 years for this to come to fruition and now it seems to have almost been snatched away from us.

Will the city council step in here? They already own the freehold, but will they want to take the financial burden on - and indeed do people want them to?

Other than that it's hard to see how Nottingham can move on. We know people want to start again on the site, green space is desperately needed in our city centre and a park on the site would be many residents' dream.

One thing is for sure - we need answers about the albatross around Nottingham's neck.
