'It’s clear and obvious' - Ex-Chelsea man blasts VAR over one decision vs Norwich

Former Chelsea forward and regular BT pundit Chris Sutton has lamented the decision to not award a penalty to Cesar Azpilicueta following what looked to be a dangerous challenge.

The Spaniard ran on to the ball before eventually going over from a questionable Marco Stiepermann challenge inside the area.

Despite the repeated calls from players and pundits alike, referee Martin Atkinson decided not to overturn the incident.

Sutton, who played 28 times for Chelsea between 1999 and 2000, told BT Sport that it’s become increasingly more difficult to earn a penalty in this day and age regardless of the better technology.

"He kicks him in the knee and it's clear and obvious,” told the pundit.

"This is why football fans around the country are getting so frustrated.

“I just don't know what you have to do there to get a penalty. Maybe get him in a headlock. It should have been overturned no doubt."

Former referee Peter Walton then weighed in on the debate, offering a brief explanation as to why the officials did not overturn the incident and gift Chelsea a vital chance to seal the game.

"Referees have been told that to overturn decisions it has to go over a certain threshold,” said Walton.

“Whilst we may think it's a penalty they obviously deemed it not to have gone over that threshold.

“Is the contact enough to make it a penalty? It's hard to say."

Regardless of the botched penalty call, Chelsea managed to claim all three points at Carrow Road with a 3-2 win and gift Frank Lampard his first victory as Blues boss.
