‘It doesn’t stop her getting it and doesn’t stop her transmitting it necessarily' Dr Hilary explains effect the Covid-19 vaccine has after first vaccine is administered

Dr Hilary Jones has explained the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine after the rollout of the vaccine began in the UK.

90-year-old Margaret Keenan become the first person to be vaccinated in the UK on Tuesday morning.

She urged other Brits to get the jab, saying: "My advice to anyone who is offered the vaccine is to take it. If I can have it at 90 then you can have it too."

Now, Dr Hilary has explained that while the vaccine won't stop her getting the virus, it may prevent a more serious reaction from it.

Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain, he said: "Although she may still be exposed to Covid-19, she is much less likely to suffer from the consequences of the virus.

"Certainly, she is much less likely to have serious consequences of Covid-19.

"It doesn't stop her from getting it necessarily, and it doesn't stop her from transmitting it.

"That's an important thing that we will discover down the line as more and more people are vaccinated.

"But it will protect her from the most serious consequences of Covid-19, probably from hospitalisation.

"It's brilliant news."

May Parsons, the nurse to give the first Covid-19 vaccine in the world to Margaret, has said she is 'proud' of her contribution.

Speaking to GMB, she said: "It was all positive for me, I think it's a tremendous, historical event for the pandemic that everyone knows what the cost of it is.

"I think the fact that we were able to offer the first vaccine today to everyone is a positive, historical event.

"I'm so proud to be able to contribute to that, to that positive step towards stopping this pandemic."

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV at 6am.
