’It depends on the bang’: California woman gets bangs. Then she says this demographic of men immediately stopped hitting on her

A California woman quickly noticed a change in attention after getting bangs, specifically, that three demographics of men stopped hitting on her.

In a TikTok video with more than 1.9 million views, Ellysa Yagho (@new.ellysa) described how she has been warding off suitors. Her answer? Cutting her hair differently. Based on her account, the biggest group that no longer approaches her is Middle Eastern men, followed by Black and Latino men.

“If I looked really Middle Eastern that day, then [Middle Eastern men would] hit on me. Black men and Latino men… Those are the big three that used to hit on me,” she says. “Now, after I got my bangs, zero of those demographics [hit on me], to the point where I’d be out with my girls and all of my girls would get hit on but me. Men hate bangs.”

Yagho clarified that the lack of attention she now draws from men feels somewhat liberating.

“All right, let’s say it’s so freeing… I can sit at the bar, have a conversation with a girl without a man being ‘can I get you a drink?’ [expletive], no you can’t,” she says.

Are bangs ‘man repellent?’

One TikTok commenter said that bangs are “men repellent,” claiming they quickly ward off anyone who comes too close. While others disagreed and pointed out that a Sabrina Carpenter or Dakota Johnson-style bang still has appeal, many thought there was some truth to Yagho’s observation.

Based on Reddit threads and men’s forums, it doesn’t appear that most men share the same sentiment. However, several noted they are not fans of the “bangs” look. One person even said they dislike it when someone “bandwagons” and gets bangs because everyone else does.

Some blogs, like Evie Magazine, refer to bangs as a “rock bottom move.” They argue that the hairstyle carries a reputation as a cry for help, often seen as a sign of emotional instability to certain men.

Others just don’t really like how they look.

Why do specific demographics of men not like bangs?

There’s no clear reason why Yagho’s bangs didn’t resonate with Middle Eastern, Black, and Latino men. It could be due to cultural value systems within those groups, or it might simply be that these groups previously found her more attractive without bangs.

Yagho also mentioned that, when she is hit on, it’s usually by Asian men. There isn’t necessarily a reason for that either, beyond cultural standards of attraction. But one size doesn’t fit all.

What types of bangs are considered attractive?

Bangs have reappeared time and again in different styles and with varying appeal. As many commenters noted, it depends on the type of bang and whether it’s currently in style. A 1920s bob and straight bang might not pair as well in the modern world as a curtain bang, but there’s still a niche for every look.

Right now, shag cuts, fringes, and layered bangs are trending. But fashion cycles quickly, and haircuts are individual. Cultural trends have become so maximalist that nearly every style finds a place can find a spot in the world.
