Is there a full moon tonight? Everything you need to know as first lunar eclipse of 2020 expected in Dublin, Ireland

The first lunar eclipse of 2020 is here - and it's going to be a dark night across Dublin.

A penumbral lunar eclipse is expected to settle across Europe, Africa, Asia, Alaska and Australia overnight, Friday January 10.

Although visibility does depend on the weather, we'll definitely see some effects as the sky will be darker.

If you're a keen observer, this may not be your only chance this year but you'll have to wait until Summer to see something again.

Here's everything you need to know about tonight's lunar eclipse:

What time will it be taking place?

According to moonblink, it's set to begin at 5.07pm this evening and will continue for four hours and five minutes overall.

That means it will end at 9.12pm.

The best time to see it - when it will be at maximum eclipse - will be 7.09pm.

What can I expect to see?

Up to 90% of the moon will be shaded by the Earth at maximum eclipse.

So your eye will see a slight shadow across the face of the moon, if you look carefully.

The moon itself will be quite large, which is what most people are going to notice.

Will I get another chance this year to see an eclipse?

Hopefully!

Another penumbral eclipse that is expected to be "very subtle" could be visible in parts of Ireland on 5 July 2020.

What is the weather going to be like?

This is the biggest factor that will decide if you're going to be able to see anything or not.

According to Met Eireann, we can expect more cloud settling this evening with rain on the way.

That cloud is expected to stick around overnight, but if there are clear patches you may be able to catch a glimpse of the lunar eclipse.
