Is HSBC app down? Millions in panic as bank app goes down on payday

HSBC’s mobile app is currently down - (PA Archive)

HSBC’s mobile banking app appears to be down, preventing thousands of users from accessing their accounts.

Error messages, including the code “err03” were displayed to users. Others received simpler messages asking them to try again at a later time.

Around 11.30am, HSBC received over 4,700 complaints, according to outage tracker DownDetector. Its sister bank First Direct, is also facing issues but has received fewer complaints.

The website indicated that the problems seemed to be affecting customers all throughout the nation.

HSBC did not specify when the app will return to normal, but it did acknowledge the issues and state that it was trying to resolve them.

“We understand some customers are having issues accessing banking services right now,” the bank said in an update on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“We’re really sorry and are investigating as a matter of urgency. We will share an update as soon as possible.”

The following message was added to its service status page to reflect the issues with both its internet and mobile banking: “We're sorry that some customers are having trouble using mobile banking, we're working hard to investigate and get this fixed”.

The same page stated that all of its other services are operating normally.

Users who required immediate access to their banking were advised by the bank to contact its customer support helpline.

Many users have taken to social media to react to the outage.

One user said: “absolutely shocking that the app is down still.. I’ve got my work wages going in tomorrow and I need access so I’m able to pay for my bus fair for work man… sort it out!”

Another user added: “Mine still down, been down all day, daren’t spend anything as you can’t check to see what’s due to come out.. very frustrating..”

A third said: “HSBC being down day before payday, I smell another £££ compensation coming my way.”

Depending on how severely the outage has affected you, you may not be automatically entitled to any compensation if your bank services have been unavailable.

For instance, you might be eligible to request reimbursement if it caused you to miss a bill or had an impact on your credit score.

Additionally, it is dependent on the duration of the service interruption and the speed at which the bank resolved it. You would have to file a complaint and provide proof of how the problem cost you money. You can withdraw your money normally at your local bank branch if you're in dire need of access to it but your internet services are unavailable.

Try calling your bank or contacting it on social media to find out what to do if there isn't a branch close by if you can't get there.
