Is going vegan cheaper? Everything you need to know about Veganuary

At the start of a new year, many people will be trying their hand at Veganuary, a challenge to go the whole month of January without eating any animal products.

Others may have chosen veganism, or eating less meat, as their new year's resolution, and are looking into the benefits. We all know eating less meat can be better for the planet, and better for our bodies, provided we're still eating a balanced diet, but is it better for your wallet?

We compared the price of animal products with their vegan substitutes to see if Veganuary can save you money.

Milk

Veganism offers a variety of milk substitutes, from almond to oat, and different people have different preferences on which one is best. Oat milk is by far the most popular, so we've used that to compare.

Alpro Oat Milk - £1.35 in Sainsbury's, or £1.35 per litre

Cravendale Semi Skimmed Milk - £2.45 in Asda, or £1.23 per litre

If you're a fan of coffee shop coffee, some places will charge a fee for some milk alternatives, so be sure to factor that into your budget.

Chicken nuggets

Birdseye Chicken Free Nuggets - £2.90 in Tesco or £1.50 with a Clubcard, or £13.19 per kilo

Battered Chicken Nuggets - £2.90 in Asda, or £4.33 per kilo

Different brands of both chicken and vegan nuggets are available at different prices, so have a look around in your usual supermarket to see if your favourites could work out cheaper, just make sure the ones you pick up are vegan.

Meatballs

Linda McCartney Vegetarian Meatballs - £2 in Sainsbury's, or £8.33 per kilo

Beef meatballs - £2.15 in Morrisons, or £6.32 per kilo

Mince

Quorn mince - £2 in Sainsbury's, or £5.71 per kilo

Beef mince - £1.79 in Aldi, or £3.58 per kilo

Sausages

Linda McCartney's Vegetarian Sausages - £1.50 in Asda, or £5.56 per kilo

British Pork Sausages - £2.39 in Aldi, or £5.58 per kilo

Ham slices

Quorn Ham Slices - £2.40 in Tesco, or £24 per kilo

British Cured Ham - £2 in Sainsbury's, or £4.17 per kilo

There are also a variety of vegan meals you can make using things like chickpeas and other beans as a source of protein, instead of replacing an animal product you would usually have with a vegetarian version.
