Irvine Welsh defends bizarre Alfredo Morelos comments after Hibs TV appearance

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has defended his comments where he suggested Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos should be "macheted into small pieces" and "consumed by seagulls".

Welsh appeared on Hibs TV alongside women's team captain Joelle Murray and host David Tanner as they discussed a controversial moment in Wednesday's game when Morelos clashed with Ryan Porteous.

Fourteen complaints were made to OFCOM, while SFA  have asked to see footage of the discussion, reports the Daily Record.

But Welsh is adamant that he wasn't being serious and individuals who have edited the clip have cut a segment that shows he was using an extreme metaphor.

He responded to the controversy by quote tweeting a comment by writer Kevin Williamson where he questioned why his quotes about seagulls were not included in videos shared on social media platforms.

He said: "Because it makes it more obvious that it wasn’t serious and this does not fit the narrative of the professional victim or martyr who craves being offended - usually on behalf of someone else.

"Other example: When I said ‘Some of Hibs recent performances have been as appetising as the contents of Dennis Neilson’s fridge’ I didn’t LITERALLY mean I would rather eat the contents of his fridge rather than watch Hibs play."

The Rangers supporter liaison officer revealed on Thursday Hibs had approached to Ibrox club to apologise for what the author had to say.

He tweeted: "We are disappointed at the comments made in relation to Alfredo and our club.

"Hibs have apologised to the club today. Nevertheless, we are sure these comments will be investigated by the football authorities."
