Irishwoman, 100, waves to newborn great grandson through window in lockdown

100-year-old Margaret Lynch waves through the window her great grandson Daniel who she has yet to meet in person.

The centenarian is cocooning at home and has not met the latest addition to the family, who was born 100 years and one day after she was on April 4, just yet.

Her moving story is told in the RTE documentary Letters in Lockdown, which airs on RTE One on Monday at 9.35pm.

Writing to the newborn, she says: “Hello Daniel Michael, this is your great granny Lynch writing to welcome you into my world of coronavirus, Covid-19 and cocooning.

“But not for much longer I hope. You are now five weeks old. I have only seen you twice from a distance and I am not allowed to touch you or cuddle you.

“It’s very hard.

“Daniel, please God when all this virus is passed over and you’re going to grow up in a wonderful world, with no pandemics.”
