Irishman 'dies from heart failure' while climbing Mount Elbrus in Russia

An Irishman has died while mountain climbing in Russia.

Alan Mahon, 40, from Co Kildare passed away while descending Mount Elbrus with a group of Irish climbers on Sunday.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed it had been called in to assist the group at around 5.20pm.

Rescuers helped bring the group to an altitude of 3,500m, but the Irishman tragically passed away.

A spokesman for the Ministry said its initial reports suggest the cause of death was heart failure.

The rest of the group were taken to the nearby town of glade Azau, but they required no medical assistance.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs told the Irish Mirror it is "aware of the case and providing consular assistance".
