Irish weather forecast: Status Yellow rainfall warning in place for five counties as 'heavy downpours' expected

Don't leave home without a brolly today as "heavy downpours" will lash east Leinster today with a risk of spot flooding in places.

A Status Yellow rainfall is in place for Dublin, Louth, Kildare, Wicklow and Meath.

The alert came into effect at 6pm on Wednesday and remains valid until 9pm tomorrow night.

Weather chiefs have warned of spot flooding with “spells of heavy rain at times”.

A Met Eireann forecaster said:"Heavy downpours and spot flooding are expected in parts of Leinster during the day.

"The rain looks set to become confined to the eastern half of the country during the afternoon with some bright spells developing elsewhere. A cold day with highest temperatures of 6C to 9C in brisk northerly winds."

And although the rain will ease later, temperatures will plunge to sub-zero levels after dark.

Met Eireann said: "Rain and showers will ease early tonight to leave it mostly dry with long clear spells developing.

"Minimum temperatures of -2C to +2C with a fairly widespread frost forming by dawn on Friday. Brisk northerly winds will decrease mostly light and variable allowing some fog patches to form."

Meanwhile, Friday morning will start off cold and frosty start with pockets of fog gradually lifting.

Most areas will be dry with spells of sunshine and light breezes. However, temperatures will remain in the single figures, with highs of just 5C and 9C.
