Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts more heavy rain after Storm Elsa chaos overnight

Met Eireann have predicted more heavy rain will lash parts of the country after Storm Elsa caused chaos last night.

One video appeared to show vehicles submerged in water as winds as strong as 120km/h bashed Salthill, near Galway city.

In the clip, uploaded by The Door Centre on Wednesday night, cars can be seen caught up in flood surges.

Both Galway City Council and Sligo County Council also warned motorists to take care as several trees were reported to have fallen on roads overnight.

And further wet weather is expected today, with showers starting in the south but gradually moving across the entire country.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Clear spells and a few showers this morning, some heavy and prolonged in the south.

"The showers will become widespread across the country by this afternoon, merging to longer spells of rain in places.

"Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in mostly moderate southeast breezes.

"Showery outbreaks of rain will ease early tonight and skies will clear in many areas.

"Turning rather chilly with lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees allowing frost and fog patches to develop in some areas. Winds will fall mostly light, varying in direction."

But there's better news ahead as a drier start is expected tomorrow and into the weekend, although it will stay chilly with lows of 0 degrees on Saturday night.

A forecaster added: "A cold and mostly dry start on Friday with some frost and fog patches. It will then be a predominantly dry day with bright spells but there will be a few showers, these primarily affecting coastal districts of the south and west.

"Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees in mostly light variable breezes.
