Irish town in Hollywood mode as Pierce Brosnan's new movie sets up filming on streets

An Irish town has been transformed into a set as filming for Pierce Brosnan's new movie takes place.

Those in Antrim recalled a great "buzz and excitement" around the town on Friday as the Market Square area was transformed into a French village for the filming of The Last Rifleman.

Filming began in Antrim Castle Gardens, before moving into the town, where World War Two era jeeps were spotted alongside French flags, bunting, and a number of buildings being turned into French bars and shops.

SDLP Councillor for Glengormley Urban, Noreen McClelland, stopped by on Friday. Although she didn't get to meet the former James Bond, she said there was a wonderful atmosphere in the town centre.

She told Belfast Live : “There was great excitement in Antrim town on Friday morning as the crew arrived to film part of The Last Rifleman. They began in Antrim Castle Gardens, a beautiful spot, then came into the town.

"It was a lovely morning, the sun shone and people arrived to see the area around the Old Court House transformed for the French Village scene.

"Everyone waited with anticipation to catch a glimpse of Pierce Brosnan. We are all looking forward to seeing our town feature in this new movie."

The Last Rifleman is a film inspired by true events, with Pierce Brosnan playing the leading role of a World War II veteran living in a care home in Northern Ireland who has just lost his wife.

The film is supported by Northern Ireland Screen and is being filmed in NI and the Republic of Ireland. The Last Rifleman is directed by Belfast native, Terry Loane, who is known for his film Mickybo & Me.

Loane also wrote In The Land of Saints and Sinners, a film starring Liam Neeson, Ciarán Hinds, and Colm Meane which was recently filming in Donegal.

The Last Rifleman currently has a 2023 release date.
