Attendance at Irish sport stays limited to 200 as Government pushes back reopening plans

Attendances at Irish sport will stay under 200 until August 10 at the earliest after the Government pushed back plans to allow outdoor crowds of 200-500 from next Monday.

GAA club championships are starting up around the country from this weekend, while in soccer, the SSE Airtricity League resumes on July 31.

It had been expected that increased limited attendances would be allowed at such events from next Monday, as the country had been due to move into phase four of easing coronavirus restrictions.

But the Government has rowed back on phase four reopening plans until August 10 to prevent a surge in new Covid-19 cases.

Wexford GAA's county board is among those campaigning for increased crowds to be permitted at club championship games, pointing to the low number of cases in the county.

The current cap on attendances at outdoor events is 200, which includes players, management teams, media and referees.

A Wexford GAA statement today read: "Wexford GAA has received no substantive response to our representations to Government seeking a modest increase in attendance capacity at our county grounds and we must therefore plan on the basis of the current regulations that cap attendance at any outdoor event at 200 persons.

"This cap includes all attendees at an outdoor event including players, officials, media etc."
