Irish showjumpers could be in mix for medals at Tokyo Olympics

Ireland's showjumpers could be in the medal mix in Tokyo tomorrow.

The trio - Darragh Kenny, Cian O'Connor and Bertram Allen - all had clear rounds in qualifying at the Sea Forest Cross Country course this evening.

Kenny, who recorded the fastest time of the Irish competitors with 82.01 on Cartello, and Bertram Allen on Pacino Amira were certain qualifiers for tomorrow evening's final.

London 2012 medalist O'Connor, who was on Kilkenny, also went around without faulting, and his time of 88.66 was just enough to book a place in the final.

But the trio are showing good form, which also bodes well for the team event at the weekend.

Ireland equestrian team manager Michael Blake said: “Couldn’t be better. We came here with high expectations so far and the boys are delivering.

"We had a very early draw that was nail-biting in ways. We didn’t get to see many people go in so we had a very solid plan and what we would do with each horse, a separate plan for all of them.

“Bertram’s horse jumped very well. Cian’s horse had a slow clear so fingers crossed we don’t get too many clears.

"It didn’t look like when we walked the track that there would be in excess of 30 clears so hopefully there won’t be. Regardless, our horses look like they are very strong and it is a very long week."

“I'm feeling very good," said Kenny. "My horse feels great, he jumped a super round.

"I am very happy with him. It is becoming tougher and tougher as the rounds go on but we all went early and we all jumped great rounds and we are pretty happy with them all.

“I thought he built a very tough course. I think there have been about 19 or 20 clear rounds now at this stage but I thought he built a very tough course. It is taking it’s toll but there are some very strong horses and very strong combinations and they are all jumping it well.

“It's a tough atmosphere - under lights, spooky jumps, new arena. It’s taking its toll and also the fact that it is an Olympics, pressure is on. I think for everybody it has been tough.

“So far so good. He feels in great form and he is jumping well. Everything feels good so far.”
