Irish Revolut customer stunned after €197 million appears in his app 'vault' balance

An Irishman has told of his confusion after almost €200 million appeared in his Revolut app.

Kevin Conway opened the fintech app on his phone last week and found €197,245,088 had been deposited into his 'vault', a method of saving within the app.

The eye-watering error was displayed for almost two hours before it was corrected.

The Co Wexford man, who said he rechecked the app repeatedly without the mammoth amount changing, insisted the actual balance should have been about €200.

He told RTE News: "It was around 3pm or 4pm on Friday of last week and I checked my app and it said I had a balance of €197m.

"Then all of a sudden it was gone.

"I didn’t know what to do. I was scratching my head. I was €200m richer for two hours there."

Mr Conway said he used the Revolut account mostly for travel and small transactions.

Revolut described the issue as a “temporary bug”.

The company stressed that despite the €200 million being displayed, the error meant the money would not have been withdrawable or available to Mr Conway.

A spokesman said: “This had no impact on the funds in that account and the error was quickly corrected by a customer support agent.”

Mr Conway revealed that a Revolut customer support agent had joked to him that they wished the astronomical sum had been real.

She quipped during a webchat: “I wish we could do it. I would make myself rich and you as well!”

There has been previous Irish cases in recent years where customers have benefited from a transaction or a banking error where money has been incorrectly lodged to their accounts.

But a number of those individuals, who decided to spend the money, have been prosecuted.

Single mum Margaret McDonnell, 23, went on a “massive spending spree” between March 7 and March 16, 2013 after a bank accidentally deposited €51,000 into her account.

The Dubliner, from Finglas, spent the money on items for her two children including bedclothes, clothes and shoes and received a suspended jail sentence in April 2017.
