Irish Rail service cancelled due to 'vandalism' after window broken

A dart service was cancelled today due to an act of vandalism. The 14:43 Howth/Bray service saw a train being taken out of service.

According to a spokesperson from Irish Rail, the train was removed due to a broken window on board. Irish Rail informed users on Twitter, stating it was "due to vandalism."

Subsequent services were disrupted due to the vandalism with the 16:05 Bray/Malahide service starting from Connolly station due to the earlier cancellation. The spokesperson also said that all other trains are operating as normal.

This comes days after a nationwide patrolling of rail services which saw Gardaí patrolling Intercity and DART services as well as Luas lines.

On Twitter, Garda Info shared images of the patrol saying that the special operation, Operation Twin Tracks aimed to prevent and detect any anti-social behaviour on Irish Rail and Luas services.

One Twitter user replied to the special operation saying: “Unfortunately this needs to be a permanent thing. It’s not fair that law-abiding citizens are afraid to travel on public transport.”

Another user replied saying: “Transport Gardai is 100% necessary. These types of PR stunts just won't cut it.”

Over 200 Dart carriages were vandalised in 2021 costing more than €500,000 to repair. Elevators at Irish Rail stations were put out of service more than 40 times in 2021 due to anti-social behaviour.
