Irish placenames that suggest the areas could be hiding lots of gold for those seeking a fortune

People living in certain parts of Ireland could be sitting on a goldmine if their address is anything to go by.

According to experts, there are some hidden gold hotspots in locations across the country, meaning some people could be living near a treasure throve worth thousands.

An ounce of gold is currently valued at €1,738 and Ireland's gold mining history dates back centuries.

It is this rich heritage is linked with the placenames given to some areas around Ireland, as well as mountains and rivers.

These names can provide clues as to where the country's hidden gold reserves may be located, as the Irish Post reports.

Here are some of the most famous locations where gold could be found:

Slieveanore

There is speculation as to whether any gold remains in this Co Clare locality.

The townland roughly translates as 'Mountain of Gold' and this is thought to reference the rich stock of gold once found in the area.

Luganire

This area in Clonmel, Co Tipperary is also known as the 'Hollow of the Gold' and has been a popular destination for prospectors over the years.

Glenanore

This 'Glen of Gold' in Co Cork has naturally attracted people seeking their fortunes given its name.

Coomanore

Another Co Cork location, position between Bantry and Dunmanway, is thought to hold hidden gold reserves,

Coomanore translates to 'Hollow of the Gold' and entices people hoping to find the precious mineral.

Previous gold finds

There have been several notable gold discoveries across Ireland down through the decades, most recently in Co Monaghan in 2018 when a mining site revealed gold worth millions.

Among the other locations where gold has been found are: The River Dodder near Rathfarnham; Cregganbaun and Croagh Patrick; Cavanacaw, Clontibret, Lecanvey and Bohaun in Co Galway; The River Dargle, The Avoca, The Avonbeg and at the foot of Bray Head.
