Irish people warned against TikTok toilet-cleaning hack that could wreck your plumbing

Cleaning the toilet may not be everyone's favourite pastime, but content creators on TikTok have found toilet cleaning videos very popular amongst viewers.

The videos, some of which are part of the "overload" trend, show people filling up their toilet bowls with a seemingly excessive amount of cleaning products in many different colours and scrubbing the toilet before flushing them down.

Often tagged as "ASMR" - autonomous sensory meridian response - many people find them relaxing to watch and listen to, but some have warned that the overload on products can cause serious damage to your toilet.

The Express reports some content creators are testing just how much they "overload" their toilets with. One had even poured six boxes of baking soda down her toilet in one sitting.

In another, she used eight cans of Ajax bleach. In yet another video the same creator made herself sick by using a whole bottle of Kaboom spray.

She told fans: "I do not recommend doing this. We all know how strong this is. This made me so sick, it was so strong."

One fan commented: "I can’t breathe watching it lol but it was so pretty!" Another described the video as "perfection".

But it's best to not try this at home, as a simple cleaner such as bleach or vinegar solution works just as well - and doesn't harm the environment, or your body.

It could also permanently damage your toilet, leaving you with a hefty bill to pay.

The Unblocktober team said: "This can cause erosion and damage to the pipes, not to mention flooding if you are filling your toilet to the brim before flushing it."

Caroline Forté, executive director of Good Housekeeping Institute said: "Flushing excessive amounts of mixed cleaners down the drain or toilet can damage surfaces and clog plumbing.

"Some of these videos show thick sludges of mixed products that can easily settle in, clog pipes and cause blockages."
