Irish Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls benefit as Sport Ireland pledge further €4m in support

Sport Ireland is pumping an extra €4m into supporting Ireland's hopefuls ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris next year.

In total, 19 national governing bodies will share €24m in 2023.

With the backing of the Government, Sport Ireland has achieved its aim to provide athletes with multi-year funding through the International Carding Scheme, and that financial support of 127 athletes across 14 sports is ring-fenced in this year's funding.

Women's senior hockey players will be supported for the first time by the Player Funding Scheme, catering for last year through to 2024.

This year and next year, Sport Ireland will deliver €300,000 in funding to Hockey Ireland to provide support to the women's team to boost preparations for Paris 2024.

"We have engaged with Hockey Ireland since post-Rio," said Niamh O'Sullivan, Sport Ireland's director of high performance.

"They wanted to better resource their teams and resourcing team sports is very expensive.

"But we would like to see youth athletes commit to hockey ahead of another career, while for the senior ones it's about buying time from work to prepare for Paris.

"With the younger athletes, it's more looking towards LA '28, but we want to directly fund players preparing for Paris."

The programme will be rolled out for other sports if it proves a success.

Meanwhile, Ciarán Ward, a two-time Olympian and an International Judo Federation Master Coach, has been appointed as Sport Ireland's head of high performance coaching.
