Irish mum desperate to find stranger who saved her choking son's life

An Irish mother is trying to track down a kind stranger who stepped in to save her son's life after he started choking at home.

The Cork woman was in a frantic state when her six-year-old boy became distressed and couldn't clear his throat when a passing stranger stopped to help.

The dramatic incident unfolded in the hallway of the woman's home and she now wants to thank a passing stranger who made a life-saving intervention.

Mary Long O'Connor was at home in the Northside of the city with her son Martin last Thursday afternoon when he suddenly became very distressed and began choking on a blue bonbon sweet. Mary immediately dialled 999, grabbed her son, and rushed to her front door to scream for help.

Neighbours around their home in Mt Brosna, Mayfield, came rushing but her son lost consciousness and appeared to be in a very bad way.

What happened next, remains a "total blur", but what Mary and her neighbours have been able to piece together is that a man who may have been parked in the Supervalu car park next to her home, saw what was happening and dashed across to help.

Mary told CorkBeo: "I can't really remember much, there was shouting - my son was unconscious but this man came to the rescue, he just jumped in, must have cleared his airway and performed CPR on Martin until the paramedics got there."

"It was all so sudden, he stayed there, suddenly there were loads of paramedics and they took over, they got Martin into the ambulance and took us to CUH."

Martin was in the hospital for three days after the incident, as doctors carried out endoscopic procedures and kept him under observation. Now, he's back home with his family but is currently off school for at least a week and his mum, Mary says "he's very brave, and is on the mend."

The man who saved Martin's life followed instructions that were given by the first responders behind the 999 call until the EMTs arrived and took the young boy into the ambulance.

Mary now wants to find the kind stranger and thank him for saving her son's life.

She said: "I don't know who he is, but I am very grateful for the man who saved Martin's life. I want to thank him for his amazing courage and bravery and for what he has done for me and my son.

"Everything was a bit frantic at the time, but now hopefully I will get the proper chance to reach out and give my gratitude."
