Irish Linen Centre launches virtual museum

A Co Down museum has launched a virtual tour that lets visitors project 3D figures into their front room.

The Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum's virtual museum went live this week.

Exhibitions and rare items from their collection will be shared daily - including early linen designs for the Titanic.

Researcher Dr Ciaran Toal said: "We wanted to make sure that despite the museum as a physical building being closed that the museum as an institution was still open.

"If we can’t be there physically let’s be there virtually."

You can also project 3D models from the collection - like Lisburn's Wallace Fountain - using an augmented reality app.

Objects have been scanned to create a 3D model which you can then see projected through your phone.

Dr Toal said: "As you look at the object through your phone it appears in your room.

"You could have this full two-metre statue in your living room and move around it."

A 3D model has also been made of Ireland's "most militant" suffragette, Lillian Metge.

He said: "If you were here 100 years ago she would have been out campaigning.

"You’re going to be able to place this Lisburn suffragette in your house."

The centre will also put out resources for school kids.

He said: "We also have some of our WW1 and WW2 workshops.

"Around May when the 75th anniversary of VE Day is coming up, we’re going to try and put resources out that will let people celebrate that at home."

Visit the museum here, or check out their 3D models.
