Irish hotel CCTV shows final moments of mystery man found dead on Sligo beach

A Sligo hotel's CCTV recorded some of the final moments of a "mystery man" before he was found dead under unknown circumstances.

The man was discovered on a beach at Rosses Point in the early hours of the morning by a father and son who were out on a run.

Little is known about the mysterious figure, with fragments of information only being provided by security cameras around Sligo City Hotel shortly before his death.

Although the strange event happened in June 2009, the case still remains a hot topic among locals as there are more questions than answers regarding the incident.

The man checked in under the alias of Peter Bergmann, and spent three nights in the Sligo City Hotel, however when an investigation into the man's death began, there was no evidence of a Peter Bergmann having existed anywhere.

He even went as far as removing all the labels from his clothing, so people would not be able to tell where they were purchased.

He was clearly intent on remaining anonymous, as he spends those few days in Sligo in complete isolation.

The investigation found out that he made his way to Sligo from Derry on a bus, but that is where the trace runs cold. Even the residence he gave the hotel turned out to be false, as it was just a vacant lot in Vienna, Austria.

His DNA and fingerprints were sent to different police stations around the globe, and not a single one found a match in the database.

The CCTV recordings show him leaving and returning to the hotel on multiple occasions, each time he exits with a bag, and returns empty-handed - clearly disposing of all his personal items.

The autopsy showed that there was no foul play involved, and nor was there saltwater in his lungs, but that he had extensive cancer and bone tumours, along with previous heart conditions.

The curious case was made into a short film in 2014 called "The Last Days of Peter Bergmann", as people continue to wonder who was this strange figure, what was he seeking in Sligo, and what happened in those final hours.
