Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast stunning change as unusual 'Azores' system set to move in

Met Eireann have shared a stunning forecast as temperatures look set to become even hotter next week.

Wednesday will see highs of up to 22C as mini-heatwave conditions see plenty of sun and very little rain.

Expert Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said an "Azores high" system could bathe the country in sunshine even 10 days from now - but warned there was still uncertainty as some models show a low pressure system pushing it back.

He said: "The latest GFS trends for next 7 days are positive with temperatures increasing and very little rainfall.

"However the latest operational run wants to bring a low pressure across the Atlantic and push the Azores high back in 10 days time. Possibly an outlier, we’ll see soon.

"In some better news the ECMWF says “come on up here Azores High, you can even have a pint outdoors in @TullysBarCarlow."

Meanwhile there will be the odd shower today with even the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms in Ulster, but it will stay dry and warm in most areas over the weekend.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A rather dull and misty morning with scattered outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. A clearance to drier and brighter conditions will follow in from the west towards the afternoon but scattered showers will occur, mainly in the eastern half of the country. Some will turn heavy over Ulster later, with a slight risk of an isolated thunderstorm. Highest temperatures of 14 to 19 degrees, warmest in the east. Light southerly breezes will veer westerly, increasing light to moderate.

"A mainly dry night tonight with prolonged clear spells and just a few isolated showers possible. Some mist and fog patches will develop overnight too. A cooler night than recently with lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in mainly light westerly or variable breezes.

"Tomorrow will start dry and bright as mist and fog patches clear away quickly. A mix of cloud and sunny spells for the afternoon with a few showers developing, mainly in the east and southeast. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees in light southwesterly or variable breezes.

"A dry night on Sunday with good clear spells to begin with but cloud will push in from the Atlantic through the night. Mist and fog patches will develop again, with the risk of some dense pockets forming. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in light southerly or variable breezes."

And Bank Holiday Monday will bring a "good deal of dry weather", before plenty of sunshine and warm conditions next week, with highs reaching the low twenties.

A forecaster added: "Mist and fog will clear away on Monday quickly leaving a dry morning with some sunny spells developing. Towards the afternoon, some isolated showers will develop along eastern and northeastern coastal counties and some light patchy rain or drizzle will develop along Atlantic coasts. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees generally in light to moderate southerly winds, though a little cooler in the west and southwest with fresher winds along Atlantic coasts.

"Dry to start overnight on Monday in Leinster and east Ulster with clear spells but becoming cloudier through the night as patchy rain and drizzle along Atlantic coasts slowly extend eastwards. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in mainly light to moderate southerly breezes.

"Rain and drizzle will continue to spread eastwards through Tuesday morning and afternoon with drier conditions following from the west with just a few well scattered showers developing, mainly over the eastern half of the country, and still staying mostly cloudy. However, further rain and drizzle will move into Atlantic coastal counties towards evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees, warmest in the east and the midlands, in mainly moderate southerly breezes. Patchy rain and drizzle will extend over much of the country overnight. Warm and muggy with lowest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees.

"Rain and drizzle will clear away through Wednesday morning. Staying generally cloudy over the western half of the country with occasional patchy rain and drizzle developing along coasts. The best of the sunny spells will be in the eastern half of the country with scattered showers in the afternoons. Highest temperatures ranging from 17 to 21 degrees on Wednesday and 17 to 22 degrees on Thursday, continuing warmest in the east and midlands. Winds will be mostly light to moderate southwesterly.

"Current indications suggest that there will be further rain and showers early on Friday then becoming more settled for the weekend. Feeling pleasant with light winds and highest temperatures in the high teens or low twenties."
