Ireland weather: Grim wintry conditions to bring snow, sleet, spot flooding as Met Eireann warns of unsettled days

Cold and unsettled conditions are set to dominate as Met Eireann has issued a rather grim forecaster for this week.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will see wintry showers with the national forecaster warning of sleet, snow, and spot flooding.

It will be very cold as temperatures will drop to as low as -2C on Tuesday.

Today will start off dry with sunny spells but will become cloudier with some patchy rain or drizzle. Temperatures will be of 5C to 8C.

Rain, drizzle, and mist to take over tonight with some frost where the skies are clear. It'll be a chilly night with temperatures of 1C to 4C.

Tomorrow will be generally dull and overcast with scattered outbreaks of rain which will turn heavy later. Highest temperatures will be of 6C to 8C.

Here is the national outlook for the rest of the week:

Monday night

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A wet and misty night with some heavy falls of rain. Minimum temperatures of 2C to 8C, coldest in Ulster.

"Winds will be light and variable for much of the night, before increasing moderate to fresh southwesterly over the southern half of the country towards morning.

Tuesday

"A very wet day nationwide with heavy spells of rain, possibly turning wintry at times in the north. Spot flooding is likely with low cloud and mist too.

"Rather cold across the northern half of the country with highest temperatures ranging 4C to 8C, in light variable breezes.

"Less cold across the southern half of Ireland with highest temperatures of 8C to 11C in moderate to fresh southwest breezes.

Tuesday night

"Scattered outbreaks of rain after dark with localised wintry falls. Frost and ice will set in too, especially across the northern half of Ireland.

"Lowest temperatures of -2C to +5C (north to south), in light to moderate north to northeast breezes.

Wednesday

"Outbreaks of rain, possibly turning to sleet and snow at times, in moderate northeast winds. Highest temperatures of 3C to 5C generally, but ranging 8C to 10C across southern counties.

Thursday and Friday

"Cold with sunny spells and scattered showers, some wintry. There will be an added wind chill factor by day with frost and possible ice developing after dark."
